cosmetic surgery
The greater availability and affordability of cosmetic surgery has led to a rapid increase in the number of people opting for surgery. There are now more cosmetic surgery practices and practitioners than at any other time but what is behind this incredible surge in popularity.
Some people think it is because our society has become more image conscious, so more and more people want to do all they can to look their best. This may be true in part but is that really as bad as many people seem to believe. Being conscious of our image is not something that is new to mankind. Every civilisation has valued certain physical attributes over others and in some cases tried to alter these via surgical procedures. Ours is no different.
The rise in surgery may also be because it has become more socially acceptable. In recent years there have been a number of high profile television programs where people undergo surgery to improve their appearance and the often-stunning results have done a lot to make people realise the incredible benefits hat can be had through surgery. Also, people see procedures such as tooth whitening and other cosmetic dentistry treatments and ask themselves what the difference is between artificially improving the appearance of the teeth and the skin. Very little, in reality. Both are carried out by professionals and both treatments can produce stunning results.
Whatever the reasons behind the popularity of cosmetic surgery and whatever the critics may say, the truth is that it is here to stay and it is only going to get better. In the last five years alone, treatments have become much safer and much more successful. Each new improvement in technology is only going to increase the potential of cosmetic surgery to the point that it will be more unusual not to have at least a little bit carried out. After all, we all have at least one thing that we don’t like about out appearance and wouldn’t mind changing if it were easy enough.
Rather than fighting against cosmetic surgery, we should embrace it and realise the wonders it has performed for so many people who had been desperately unhappy. On those TV shows, the moment they reveal the person they are often overcome with their new self and instantly feel their lost confidence come flooding back, can that really be such a bad thing?
